Description

91-94 points/’Outstanding,’ Allen Meadows (Burghound): “(from a .33 ha holding of <55-year-old vines). Once again, the wood treatment is discreet but not invisible on the ripe and very fresh aromas of poached plum, cassis and pretty floral wisps. The racy, detailed and intense middle weight flavors possess a more sophisticated mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, balanced and impressively long finale. Excellent. Drink: 2032+. (Jan 2022)”

93 points William Kelley (Wine Advocate): “Perfumed and ethereal, the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, orange rind, peonies and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and sensual, with melting tannins, lively acids and a long, mineral finish, it’s a fine success. Drink: 2025-2045. (Jan 2022)”

91-93 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): “Rich purple. This is rather powerful and even chunky which is a surprise for this vineyard. Fruit lightens up at the back of the palate, tannins are evident. Though Estournelles is suffering some dieback for rootstock reasons, the crop is saved by the presence of springs and cool winds. Charles now picks later to avoid too strict a structure. Cherries coming up at the finish. Interesting, not quite in place yet. (Nov 2021)”
