Description

94 points James Suckling: “A rich and dense red, showing some roasted sesame from the oak with red chili chocolate, dark olives, blackberries and hints of purple flowers and spice. Full and compact, with tons of fine-grained tannins rounding off the fruit. An outstanding pugnitello here. Drinkable now, but better after 2023. (8/8/22)”

92 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): “The 2019 Pugnitello is an intriguing wine. It offers up copious dark cherry fruit, plum, leather, coffee, licorice and dried herbs, showing notable depth and concentration. There’s plenty of tannic heft, but this is Pugnitello, after all. Drink 2024-2032 (Jul 2022).”

92 points Susan Hulme MW (The Wine Independent): “The 2019 San Felice Pugnitello is a youthful, deep ruby-purple color and on the palate it is lovely, gentle and round with juicy, bright acidity and a gentle, soft grip to tannins. This wine showcases the ancient, indigenous grape variety Pugnitello which San Felice have planted and developed in their experimental vineyard called Vitarium, in collaboration with the University of Florence. It produces a really attractive wine here. After Sangiovese, Pugnitello is the most planted grape variety at San Felice. Drink 2023-2030 (Nov 2022).”

Producer notes: “100% Pugnitello. A dense purplish hue, with a remarkably rich nose, offering cinnamon, clove, wild fruit preserves and tobacco leaf. Velvet-smooth, ultra-savory palate that magnificently reproduces the fragrances encountered on the nose. Food Pairing: Meat-sauced first courses, roast Guinea-fowl and veal.”
