Description

96 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): “Once the touch of funk from long sur-lie maturation blows off, a lovely nose of lemon curd, yellow grapefruit and fresh pineapple unfolds. With more aeration, a touch of floral honey develops. In spite of the imposing structure, this is a very focused wine that has tremendous mineral freshness at the spectacularly bright, lemony finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. (9/23/21)”

94 points Stephen Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): “Tasted in Wiesbaden in August this year, the 2020 Pettenthal GG shows a clear, fresh, very reductive and still yeasty bouquet that indicates depth but doesn’t really invite me at this stage. Juicy, elegant and with a linear structure, this is a dense and intense, sustainably salty Pettenthal that needs a lot of time in the bottle (or on the air), but then it will repay. Drink: 2026-2036. (Sep 2021)”

93 points Mosel Fine Wines: “The 2020er Pettenthal, as it is referred to on the consumer label, offers a hugely reductive and smoky nose of almond, orange zest, candied grapefruit, bacon, and toast. It is only gradually that riper scents of fruits (yellow peach and raspberry) kick in. The wine is full of grip and energy on the palate driven by citrusy fruits, sesame, and fine buttery elements. The finish develops great persistence despite its lightness, with plenty of fresh and complex elements in the aftertaste. This singular dry Riesling made along the lines of great reductive Burgundian wines is really impressive. 2025-2035. (Nov 2021)”
