Description

97 points Tim Atkin, MW: “(12.5%) A glorious follow up to the 2007 release, this reflects the growing season of a cooler, wetter year as well as the benefits of farming your own vineyards in tricky vintages. Delicate, layered, complex and ageing with poise and grace, this blend of Viura and 10% Malvasía is a textbook expression of a traditional Rioja white, with salty, bready, tangy complexity and a long life ahead of it. 2021-35. (2021)”

97 points James Suckling: “A pristine, classic Rioja with vanilla, lanolin, sea salt, light blanched almond and nougat. It’s full-bodied with layers of fruit and intense, unique flavors. Tasting history. Drink now. (11/2/20)”

97 points/’Top 100 Wines of 2021,’ Wine & Spirits: “Sixty bucks is not a lot to pay for a wine that will make you smile, especially if you love grand cru Buregundy and can no longer afford it. No, this isn’t Burgundy, but it provides a parallel pleasure, layered and sumptuous, its flavors frisky in a brisk cascade of fruit–oranges, lemons, quince, litchi, Asian pear, Buddha’s hand. Those golden flavors are structured by a fresh Marcona almond scent, an outcome of long aging in oak barrels, creating a parallel to another great white wine grown in limestone soils–Fino Sherry. In the end the earthiness, the satin richness and the brilliance of the golden fruit ground it firmly in Rioja. There were once more of these great, long–lived whites from the region’s calcareous clay soils. Kudos to the López de Heredia family for sustaining one of the legendary wines of Spain. (Dec 2020)”

95 points Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate): “The 2008 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva has a subtle and elegant nose, shyer than the 2009, a little closed and undeveloped. It’s a year with more acidity and less ripeness, with a combination of citrus and honey and a very dry sensation in the palate, a chalky mouthfeel. This feels undeveloped and in need of time in bottle to develop more nuance and complexity. This is a cooler and sharper wine than the 2012 Gravonia or the 2009 Tondonia Blanco. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2017. Drink: 2022-2029. (Oct 2020)”

95 points Josh Raynolds (Vinous): “Bright gold. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes dried peach, pear skin, orange peel, buttered toast, vanilla and marzipan, and a salty mineral flourish adds energetic lift. Chewy, nutty and dry on the palate, offering concentrated orchard and pit fruit, toasted nut, honey and nougat flavors and hints of candied fig and sea salt. Shows impressive power on the penetrating and persistent finish, which echoes the honey and pit fruit notes. Drink: 2023-2033. (Apr 2021)”
