Description

93-95 points/’Very Fine+,’ Steen Öhman (Winehog): “The Rugiens Hauts is well known by collectors of Pommard (although some prefer Rugiens Bas). In theory, this could be correct, but in the end, the producer determines the expression and the quality – and this is a tremendous Rugiens. The vines are just south of Pommard, and quite high on the slope. Planted in 1935, the old vines take a framework of 50% new oak. This is a magnificent Rugiens, with perfumed notes of raspberries and blueberries spiced with white pepper. Classical, but with the sensual whiff of 2019 energy – this is good juice. Drink from 2035. (1/6/21)”

92-94 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): “Though from the upper part, Guillaume Glantenay notes that their Rugiens still has the iron rich red soil. Not especially deep in colour. A fine, but reserved bouquet. This is all about refinement more than power, though there is certainly adequate concentration. Note the detailed fresh red fruit behind. (Dec 2020)”

91-94 points/’Outstanding,’ Allen Meadows (Burghound): “(from a .22 ha holding). Background hints of herbal tea and the sauvage can be found on the liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries and newly turned earth. Once again, the middle weight flavors possess a gorgeous texture and plenty of minerality on the punchy, detailed and chiseled finish where a touch of youthful austerity emerges. This is a big but sleek Rugiens and that is clearly built-to-age. Strongly recommended if you have the patience. Drink: 2031+. (Apr 2021)”
