Tannat
Tannat is a bold, tannic red grape variety originally from southwest France, where it is the dominant grape in Madiran AOC wines. It has also become Uruguay’s flagship red grape, thriving in the country’s warmer climate and clay-rich soils, where it produces a more approachable style.
What makes Tannat unique is its exceptionally high tannin content and deep color, resulting in structured, powerful, and long-lived wines. In France, Tannat wines are intensely tannic, with flavors of blackberry, plum, earth, smoke, and spice, often requiring extended aging or blending (typically with Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc) to soften. In Uruguay, winemakers use techniques such as micro-oxygenation and oak aging to create a more fruit-forward, balanced style, with softer tannins and lively acidity.
Tannat is also notable for its high levels of polyphenols and antioxidants, making it one of the healthiest red wines. It pairs well with grilled meats, stews, and aged cheeses, offering a robust and distinctive drinking experience.
