Description

Importer notes: “Anne-Sophie Dubois is part of a young generation of rising star vignerons in Beaujolais. Based in the heart of Fleurie, Anne-Sophies wines epitomize delicacy and finesse, with a style and approach aligned with the Gamay grown in the area. Having learned winemaking in Volnay, she draws from her experience there to achieve beautiful expressions of Gamay; full of depth and aromatic complexity without over-extracting and drawing out harsh tannins and phenolics. In addition to Beaujolais blanc, Anne-Sophie produces three expressions of Gamay, the most accessible wine being the Paso Doublé Gamay which is labeled as a Bourgogne and meant to be consumed young. From young vines planted in the Fleurie AOC. Soils are highly granitic. Traditional vinification in cuve at low temperatures and using native yeasts.”

WHWC Staff Notes: “Many people aren’t aware that wines labeled simply as Bourgogne can contain Gamay in some proportion. In the case of Anne-Sophie Dubois’ Paso Doble Bourgogne Rouge, it’s all Gamay. I first heard about Dubois last year in an article about the revitalization currently underway in Beaujolais, where Anne-Sophie was creditied with making ‘some of the most soulful, Burgundy-like’ Gamay around. That comes as no surprise, as she acquired her winemaking skills in Volnay and then took her magic, non-carbonic touch back to Fleurie. The Paso Doble is her entry-level bottling. However, it’s no simpleton in its expression. You will find broad, lush structure and elegant complexity, with all the aromatic hallmarks of a great red Burgundy allied to the crisp, red berry fruit and a stony minerality of a classic Gamay wine. This will appeal to Pinot Noir lovers and Gamay fans alike. Trust me, the Dubois hype train is one you want to be on.” – Casey Carmichael, 8/19/16
