91-93 points William Kelley (Wine Advocate): “Always the richest and most muscular of Dugat-Py’s communal bottlings, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, forest floor, spices and grilled meats. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and layered, with a broad-shouldered chassis of fine, powdery tannins and lively acids, it’s long and penetrating. As usual, it derives from vines between 50 and 109 years of age located in the lieux-dits Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise and Les Marchais, and it was vinified with 60% whole cluster and raised in 50% new oak. Having visited the domaine’s vines before harvest, I can attest that its deep, saturated hue comes from an abundance of tiny, shot berries with a high skins-to-juice ratio, rather than to any desire to push extraction in the winery. Reduction pushes the fruit to the background today though there is lovely freshness to the delicious, vibrant and well-detailed flavors that exude evident minerality on the complex, lingering and balanced finale. The supporting tannins are really quite fine and overall, and somewhat surprisingly, the palate impression is almost delicate. Drink: 2025+. (Jan 2021)”
