Description

90-93 points Robert Parker: “[$55 list] A blend of 94% Syrah and 6% estate co-fermented Viognier, the 2012 Syrah was aged 18 months in 41% new and 59% neutral French oak. While still in barrel, this big Syrah appears to have outstanding potential. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by classic aromas of licorice, camphor, charcoal, pepper, bouquet garni, roasted meats and lots of blackberry and black currant fruit. This dense, subtle, silky-textured Syrah exudes fruit, glycerin and charm. It cuts a bigger, broader swath across the palate than the 2011, but will be drinkable when released, and should age nicely for 7-10 years. Drink: 2013-2023. (Oct 2013)”

90-92 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): “Dark red cherry, plum, spice, mocha and new leather notes flesh out in the 2012 Syrah, a wine distinguished by its aromatic complexity and nuance. A beautifully detailed wine, the 2012 is full of personality and character. Layers of fruit build to the rich, textured finish. There is plenty of potential in this plush, full-bodied Syrah. As always, the straight Syrah is a bit chunkier than the Hyde bottling, but that is more of an observation than a critique. The 2012 was done with 25% whole clusters and a dash (6-7%) of Viognier. Drink: 2014-2022. (Nov 2013)”

91 points Wine Spectator: “Framed by creamy, toasty espresso bean–scented oak, the syrupy core of black cherry, blackberry and boysenberry flavors fold together nicely, giving it a sense of completeness, finishing with a pretty fruit aftertaste. 900 cases made. (12/31/04)”
