Description

92-94 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): “(two-thirds of the vines are between 70 and 80 years of age and the remaining vines are approximately 20+ years old). This is perhaps the ripest wine in the range with a liqueur-like nose of black cherry, earth and underbrush hints that introduce rich, serious and concentrated flavors that possess an abundance of mid-palate extract as it almost completely buffers the otherwise very firm tannic spine, all wrapped in a palate staining finish. This stunning effort should reward at least a dozen years in the cellar and drink well for another decade thereafter. Drink: 2021+. (May 2011)”

93 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): “Good ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, raspberry, mocha and menthol on the nose, with a suggestion of superripeness. Silky, juicy and sweet, offering a rare combination of sheer sucrosite and inner-mouth lift; terrific dark fruit intensity here. Shows little sign of surmaturite or heat in spite of the 13.5% alcohol. Finishes with ripe, granular tannins, a note of licorice and lingering sweetness. The Pavelots made 40 barrels of this superb and atypically powerful wine. (Mar/Apr 2012)”

90 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): “The 2009 Pavelot la Dominode is also a very ripe wine, with more of a 1990 than a 1999 character. The nose offers up a deep, ripe and intense nose of black cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, game, spice tones and an impressive base of minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with borderline overripeness, fine-grained tannins and a very long, beautifully focused and chewy finish. Again, for fans of this style of red Burgundy, this wine will be a dynamite addition to the cellar, but for those who look for a more transparent representation of this region, this may prove to be a wine to leave for fans of the riper style of red Burgundy. 2016-2040+. (Nov/Dec 2010)”

Wall Street Journal: “[$60 list] From the greatest vineyard in Savigny, this has almost grand cru complexity and concentration beneath its firm, tannic structure. Another cellar candidate. (11/5/11)”
