Description

95 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): ” Weingut Willi Schaefer) Having missed the auctions yet again this September in Trier, I was thrilled to see that Andrea and Christophe Schaefer had been kind enough to send along their auction bottling of Spätlese from the Domprobst in my range of samples. This is a stunning young Spätlese, soaring from the glass in a very refined and complex constellation of pear, tangerine, bee pollen, exotic floral tones redolent of iris blossoms and lilacs, a lovely base of slate, a hint of lavender and somewhere in the upper register a faint resinous touch that reminds me of rosemary and is totally exotic. On the palate the wine is pure, refined, fullish and perfectly filigreed, with a lovely core, ripe, seamless acids and a well water quality that I most often find in great Kabinetten, but almost never in Spätlese! This is not as flamboyant as the 2015 version, but this is a magical bottle in its own right and need take a backseat to no wine! 2023-2060. (Nov/Dec 2017)”

95 points Mosel Fine Wines: ” AP: 13 17. This delivers a stunningly elegant and complex nose which is initially still marked by some residues of spontaneous fermentation through smoky notes of bacon and some bakery elements. These quickly give way to magnificent notes of white flowers, vineyard peach and spices. The wine has a great juicy presence on the palate, a feeling also amplified by a glorious smooth touch of whipped cream. The finish is intense, spicy and smoky. What a beautiful and complex Spätlese. 2026-2046. (Aug 2017)”

95 points Stephan Reinhadt (Wine Advocate): “Schaefer’s 2016 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese (Auction) is very subtle and clear on the deep, smoky but also sensual and highly finessed nose. Lithe and very delicate on the elegant, beautifully balanced palate, this is a terribly lush and refined Domprobst Spätlese with fine acidity and a refreshingly mineral, persistently salty and mouthwatering finish. Great finesse here. This AP #13 Domprobst was sold at the auction in Trier in September 2017. Tasted March 2018. Drink: 2020-2050. (Apr 2018)”

95 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): “A little bit more opulent than the two “regular” Domprobst Spätleses. Complex exotic fruit aromas, and a passion fruit and star fruit freshness that really makes this stand out in the 2016 field. (6/7/17)”

94 points David Schildknecht (Vinous): “Fresh apple, pear and lime on the nose are accompanied on the creamy, buoyant palate by rich, cashew-like nut paste. At the same time, there is juicy, animating brightness here beyond even that demonstrated by the corresponding A.P. #10, as well as a tingling, gingery spiciness that I hadn’t noticed in any other Schaefer 2016s. Christoph Schaefer suggested that slightly lower yields in the sector from which this auctioned bottling originated – at least in part a legacy of hail – may account for its enhanced acidity and overall concentration. The superbly sustained finish manages to soothe as well as to refresh and invigorate. Drink: 2017-2040. (Jan 2018)”
