Description

98 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): “The Auction Goldkapsel Auslese from 2009 is more heavily botrytized than the Auction Auslese, and it too is an absolutely monumental bottle of wine in the making. The bouquet is deep and flat out brilliant, as it soars from the glass in a citric blend of apricot, pineapple, lemon, lime zest, a very crystalline expression of slate and lemon blossoms in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, extremely pure and impressively light on its feet, with very zesty acidity, laser-like focus and a stunningly long, seamless and utterly electric finish. Transcendental wine. 2018-2070. (Mar/Apr 2010)”

95 points Mosel Fine Wines: “AP: 02 10. Harvested from botrytized grapes with 130° Oechsle towards the end of the harvest, this wine is aromatically precise, with ripe notes of William pear, apricot flower, almond, as well as green herbs and smoke. It is incredibly intense and focused on the palate, like some of the Fritz Haag wines. A touch of honey and apricot comes through with some further airing in an incredibly long finish. This is hugely impressive in a light BA / long Goldkapsel style. 2017-2049. (2010)”

95 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): “Picked in a second and final botrytis selection on October 31, the 300 liters of Zilliken 2009 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule A.P. #2, display a striking, cloud-like sense of wafting buoyancy along with alluring, caressing creaminess of texture. The scents and flavors here are from another world than that of the early-harvested auction Auslese, dominated by fig, date, and white raisin. You catch the high acidity rippling down your spine, but it is essentially sublimated, like an electrical current that keeps the wine running through to a finish of phenomenal sheer persistence if embryonic evolutionary state. Even without genuine complexity to its credit, this is in every other respect – purity, balance, enervation, and did I already say “persistence”? – a marvel. It can join the list of wines from the present collection that truly needs as well as deserves to be cellared. Check in on it again in 7-10 years and expect it to last for 40. What you can expect? I am pretty sure this wine is for now showing less than it’s hiding, and whatever future complexity it’s hiding is almost by definition a secret. (Dec 2010)”
